While the Atlanta Braves continue their search for a manager, one former Braves player has landed a surprise role. Former Atlanta catcher Kurt Suzuki has been hired as the Los Angeles Angels manager in a surprising decision. Early indications had former first baseman Albert Pujols taking over for former Braves bench coach Ron Washington. However, it seems the two sides couldn't agree on a contract or staff, leading to the hiring of Suzuki in a fun twist for the respected former backstop. Suzuki spent the 2017 and 2018 seasons with the Braves, helping the transition into contention.

There wasn't elite production from the catcher, but a handful of clutch moments that endeared the limited hitter to the fan base. Add in the solid defense and energy brought to the roster, and it makes sense that Suzuki is getting a chance in a management role. At only 42 years old, it is a signing that the Angels hope provides long-term stability for the roster. It is the second time the hiring process has ended with a former Brave in the seat, with Washington being hired a season ago before being forced to step away due to health concerns.

It is the exact path the Braves need to be following, looking for a younger former player who is going to bring energy to the clubhouse. If there is one consistent source of frustration, it has been a relaxed approach that demanded little urgency anytime things were going sideways. Whether it was the collapse this season or rewinding the clock to the back-to-back playoff exits against the Philadelphia Phillies, a common theme has been a lack of fire.

This is something that must be paid attention to in the hiring process of the next manager. Suzuki is a great example of the former player mindset that the Braves could benefit from and perhaps help energize the lineup.

While the Braves need to do a better job of bringing in energizing players, this is a chance to help address the issue. Suzuki could've been a great option, but there are other former player angles the franchise could explore with Andruw Jones and David Ross coming to mind as great examples.

Regardless, Braves fans can't help but be excited for Suzuki and hope the young manager can turn around a struggling franchise. It is a great step for the former Atlanta backstop and gives the franchise yet another reason to pay attention to an Angels team that has made a habit of bringing in former Braves players and coaches.
