Former Atlanta Braves outfielder Kevin Pillar had a tough weekend with the Texas Rangers opting to move in a different direction. The veteran signed a minor league deal with the franchise before becoming a surprise piece of the Opening Day roster. In the time since, Pillar has struggled, hitting .209 and leaving the Rangers little choice but to move on. For Pillar, this is unlikely to be the end for a player who has proven his value with his defensive ability. Whether it is a minor league deal or a role on a rebuilding team, Pillar should have little trouble finding another landing spot.
Atlanta fans will remember the veteran outfielder from the 2023 season and an impressive start. The noted defender made an impression on Braves fans with his strong start to the season. Hitting .282 in the month of May, the veteran had an odd power surge, hitting five home runs at a time that Atlanta badly needed the extra contributions.
Respected Former Brave Kevin Pillar Has Been Designated for Assignment
While the Braves have had a 2025 trend of seeking out reunions, it doesn't appear that will be the case with Pillar. Already, the team must evaluate how it will make room for the return of Jurickson Profar late next month. The Braves have added two solid defensive replacements in Eli White and Stuart Fairchild as well.
Barring any unexpected injuries, Atlanta simply doesn't have the roster space to attempt this reunion. Still, there is reason to believe Pillar's career will continue with the veteran still offering an above-average glove and an average above the Mendoza line.
With the league's struggling offense, this is more than enough to offer the accomplished veteran a chance to continue his career. For Atlanta, the team's focus when it comes to potential improvements should be on the bullpen. The struggles of Raisel Iglesias and recent regression have made it clear that any moves for Atlanta must be focused on fixing this issue and not adding a limited offensive contributor to an already crowded Braves outfield.
