Advocating for the Atlanta Braves to sign or trade for anyone in the next weeks of the season only makes sense in very specific circumstances. The only two scenarios in which it makes sense to bring in a new addition are in a potential bargain deal or a move that helps the rotation make it through the 2025 season.
With this in mind, the Braves should consider reuniting with a familiar face to help pass the long weeks ahead in a failed season. Jason Heyward's MLB debut will forever be remembered as one of the most electric moments a top prospect has enjoyed in their first game.
Stepping to the plate against Carlos Zambrano, the young outfielder hit a missile that whistled out of the park and sent Braves fans into a frenzy. It seemed to be a sign of things to come for the slugger. However, expectations were never quite met, and when it became clear the franchise needed a rebuild, Heyward was traded. This started an interesting career path that includes a World Series title and the former Braves star filling a myriad of roles.
Braves Should Give Jason Heyward a Chance to Retire in Atlanta
Signing Heyward at this stage of his career is all about the story, not the possible production. There hasn't been anything put on tape in the past two seasons that leaves Atlanta fans reason to believe the outfielder has turned back the clock. It is about giving fans another reason to be excited and giving a respected piece of recent franchise history a chance to retire with the Braves.
It isn't as if Atlanta's bench isn't going to have open spots with Marcell Ozuna a likely trade option and Luke Williams remaining a liability on the roster. If the Braves want to bring in veteran depth that helps keep fan attention, Heyward is the perfect option. This isn't a move you make if you're anywhere close to contending. However, with the season already falling far out of control, there simply isn't anything else to be lost.
Bringing in Heyward gives you the chance to give the former top prospect a respectable exit where everything began. Add in the fan interest it is likely to generate, and the Braves must at least consider making the move.
