It seemed the Atlanta Braves had a chance at a familiar reunion when Stuart Fairchild was forced to the team's injured list. Former Braves outfielder Kevin Pillar remained a free agent after his exit from the Texas Rangers. However, Atlanta opted to add former division rival José Azócar until Fairchild was able to return. Azócar has spent the majority of his time with the Braves on the bench, only making an appearance as a pinch runner. It makes a level of sense for the Braves not to invest further in the position in what seems to be a lost season.
Not only is the team currently floundering, but there is the consideration of Fairchild's pending return and Jurickson Profar soon starting a rehab assignment. The club doesn't have a viable reason to go out and add to the position with how the season has gone. Opting to add Azócar allows you to quickly pivot away from a piece you understand isn't going to play into the season. There simply isn't a path for the former Met to make his way into the lineup, guarding a roster spot the team will soon need to utilize.
Former Braves Outfielder Kevin Pillar's Career Appears Over
Kevin Pillar remaining a free agent after his release from the Rangers speaks to where his career has fallen. While the outfielder has never been an elite hitter, the offensive production was capable enough to earn him a consistent roster spot. Pillar's defensive ability has been the veteran's defining trait in what has been a solid Major League career.
As sad as it is to consider, it appears the possibility of this being the end for Pillar is very real. While the veteran's time in Atlanta was short, he quickly became a beloved member of the team's bench unit. The outfielder was willing to step into any role and found ways to contribute to winning baseball. It is the exact type of depth this year's team so incredibly lacks.
If this is the end for the outfielder, his time in Atlanta will be remembered fondly for a player who filled such a small role. Pillar has spent time with the Blue Jays, Giants, Red Sox, Rockies, Mets, Dodgers, Braves, Angels, White Sox, and Rangers in what has been a surprisingly productive career. While it may be at an end, the outfielder has had an impressive run that includes his memorable tenure with Atlanta.
