Former Atlanta Braves reliever Scott Blewett didn't have to wait long into the 2025 offseason to find his next landing spot. The right-hander opted to sign a minor league deal with the St. Louis Cardinals, offering some level of early-offseason stability. It is a solid move for the Cardinals and provides Blewett a chance to return to the National League after spending the end of last season with the Baltimore Orioles. Blewett was a short-term piece for the Braves as well in what was a telling midseason move for the franchise.

Atlanta jettisoned Blewett off the roster for Craig Kimbrel, who made one scoreless appearance before being taken off the roster himself. It was a move that indicated where the Braves' season was heading and told of how lost the front office had become.

Taking Blewett off the roster was always an odd decision with the right-hander showing a surprising penchant for coming up in the clutch. Twice in his time with Atlanta, the Braves threw the righty on the mound in extra innings with a ghost runner at second, and each time Blewett found a way to extend the game and give Atlanta a chance at the win.

Instead of this earning Blewett his deserved respect, the Braves opted to bring up Kimbrel. This would've made sense if not for the fact that you allowed an Atlanta legend the indignity of making a single road appearance before being taken back off the roster. Adding to this awful decision, Kimbrel would go on to make 13 appearances for the Houston Astros, giving up only three earned runs and offering reliable innings.

For Blewett, it had to be a frustrating tenure, and a reason why signing a minor league deal with Atlanta was unlikely to be highly considered. It would've been a great depth signing for the Braves based on how the reliever performed in his time in an Atlanta uniform. However, it makes sense for Blewett to move to the Cardinals and perhaps provides a bit of a needed reset.

The veteran reliever finished the 2025 season with an ERA north of five and clearly struggled after leaving Atlanta. Still, the ability is there, and it wouldn't be a surprise to see the reliever find his way into a new, productive role.

Looking at the current Braves' roster, the bullpen remains an area of concern and is something that Atlanta must address throughout the rest of the offseason. There is far too much riding on this offseason to bargain shop again and hope answers present themselves. After a 2025 season full of mismanagement, the pressure is on for the Braves to find answers as Blewett gets a fitting fresh start.
