The Atlanta Falcons' decision to bring quarterback-turned-tight-end Feleipe Franks back to the roster came as an offseason surprise. While having additional depth on special teams is never a bad thing, it isn't as if Franks has made a positive impression in his time in the league.

When given a chance to play quarterback, the young signal-caller promptly threw an interception and would spend the next two years attempting to change positions. Landing with the Carolina Panthers, Franks made one impact play, and it came against his former team. Aside from this, Franks was a non-factor on a team desperate for capable targets.

Re-signing Franks is going to be a short-lived reunion, with any camp standouts easily beating such a limited player. It was a running joke among Falcons fans why former head coach Arthur Smith continued to cut more qualified contributors to keep Franks on the roster. Having the tight end active didn't make sense when he couldn't offer production from any of the positions he has attempted to play.

Falcons' Reunion with Feleipe Franks Will Be Short-Lived

Bringing him back under Raheem Morris is a surprise, but one that isn't going to last. Any camp standouts or players on the fringe of the Atlanta roster are going to have an easy time beating out Franks for the handful of roster spots up for grabs. Atlanta has good depth at tight end and four quarterbacks on the roster, with Michael Penix, Kirk Cousins, Easton Stick, and Emory Jones all currently under contract.

This leaves Franks without a position to contribute to, even if there is a bit of progress shown. Atlanta isn't going to retain the former quarterback unless there is shocking improvement and a number of injuries force Franks into a position of relevance. With this in mind, any camp standouts can be penciled ahead of a player who continues to find ways to keep his career alive.

Perhaps Franks would be better off attempting to continue his career in another league that is going to offer reps that give him a chance at improvement. Regardless, his return to the Falcons roster isn't going to last long with the current level of talent.
