Former Atlanta Falcons quarterback Taylor Heinicke made a surprising decision, opting to announce his retirement. While Heinicke is an extremely limited quarterback, there are less accomplished talents getting opportunities to compete for roster spots. Regardless, it seems that the veteran is content with his career accomplishments and will walk away with 6,663 passing yards and 39 passing touchdowns.
It is a solid career for a player who started as an undrafted free agent back in the 2015 season and would spend time with the Minnesota Vikings, New England Patriots, Houston Texans, Carolina Panthers, Washington Commanders, Atlanta Falcons, and finally the Los Angeles Chargers.
The best moment of Heinicke's career is unquestionably the quarterback being thrown into the starting lineup in a surprise playoff game against Tom Brady. Heinicke lived up to the moment, passing for 306 yards and having a memorable rushing touchdown where the quarterback dove for the pylon and extended for the score. It was the definition of gritty and demanded the best from Brady and a far more talented Tampa roster to make their way past the overlooked quarterback.

While it was an outlier of a moment for a career that was spent primarily as a backup option, it was unforgettable. For the Falcons, this magic wasn't found when Heinicke joined the franchise, with the veteran struggling with turnovers and unable to make basic throws at a consistent level.
Fans could be quick to point to poor coaching or a bad offensive roster setting Heinicke up for failure. Regardless, there is no denying that the veteran's legacy in Atlanta isn't a positive one, with a lone season ending in a clear level of frustration for both sides. There simply was never any momentum, even with Desmond Ridder opening the door for Heinicke to take over as the starting quarterback.
Looking back, Heinicke's career is going to be remembered for his time with Washington and a magical playoff moment when he had Brady's eventual Super Bowl champion Bucs on the ropes. It was a great underdog moment and gave Atlanta fans hope that perhaps their division rival wasn't headed for Super Bowl glory.
Heinicke fell short but did enough to make a name for himself and set up what would be a solid career as a backup option. While the veteran isn't going to be missed in Atlanta, there is no disrespecting the incredible underdog story and what Heinicke accomplished.
