One of the more amusing Atlanta Falcons offseason stories was the decision to bring back quarterback-turned-tight-end Feleipe Franks. The utility player was a constant member of the roster during Arthur Smith's tenure as the Falcons' head coach. Seeing the former quarterback brought back was a surprising story with Raheem Morris and Terry Fontenot now at the controls. Still, it is incredibly unlikely that Franks makes the final roster when you look at the pieces contending for the final slots. Franks has been a consistent miss no matter the position he has attempted to play.
Continuing his NFL career as long as he has is an impressive accomplishment for a tight end who didn't catch passes or a quarterback who can't throw. Smith would often line Franks up in different positions, attempting to throw the defense off balance or run trick plays. It seemed the former head coach envisioned Franks as Atlanta's own version of hated rival Taysom Hill. This was a short-lived fantasy with Franks being able to play a handful of positions but unable to contribute at any of them.
Feleipe Franks is Unlikely to Make the Falcons Roster
With this in mind, it is impossible to believe Franks is going to make the team's roster with the offseason improvements Atlanta has made. This isn't the same roster that Franks somehow snuck onto during Smith's tenure. There have been meaningful improvements on both sides of the ball, and it is time to let go of the past completely. Bringing in the special teams option as a potential final roster piece isn't a terrible decision.
It allows the former QB to attempt to continue his career and gives you an outside chance at finding a final roster piece. However, barring a surprise development, it is time to turn the page on Franks and allow the depth piece to either end his career or find a new landing spot.
As harsh as it might seem, Franks simply isn't an NFL talent and has continued to illustrate this. Atlanta allowing the veteran to make the roster yet again would be a mistake they are likely to avoid late this summer.
