The Atlanta Braves will finally get back starting shortstop Ha-Seong Kim on Tuesday, with the veteran infielder having completed his rehab assignment. Kim will step into the Atlanta lineup with a surprising level of pressure, with surprise contributors stepping up in the infielder's absence. The Braves were spared having to choose which piece to demote, with Eli White being moved to the seven-day IL due to a concussion from making what might have been a game-saving catch in Sunday's finale against the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Kim has bought a level of grace from this as well, with the Braves being forced to put Mauricio Dubon into the lineup in the outfield due to the loss of White and Ronald Acuna Jr. With this in mind, there is a bit of runway, but Kim is still facing pressure to live up to offensive expectations based on not only what Dubon has accomplished, but backup infielder Jorge Mateo.

Dubon has hit .271 and driven in 23, coming up with a number of clutch hits. While it is a much smaller sample size for Mateo, the results have been equally impressive, with the shortstop hitting .309 and scoring 15 runs despite only having 55 at-bats so far in the 2026 season.

This makes it clear that if Kim comes back and struggles at any level at the plate, the Braves won't hesitate to pivot. We've already seen an aggressive managing style from Walt Weiss that is loyal only to production and not salaries or past performance.

Braves Shorstop Ha-Seong Kim Facing Instant Pressure After Atlanta's Hot Start

What is so interesting about this competition is the fact that it is a reversal from what Atlanta has endured the past two seasons. Orlando Arcia and Nick Allen were the team's primary options and struggled to reach the Mendoza line and offer any level of consistent offense. Fast forward a season, and the franchise has such a wealth of options that the starting shortstop is returning under clear pressure to provide a consistent level of production.

It will be interesting to watch how Weiss opts to navigate his current roster options and how the trio of Mateo, Kim, and Dubon are worked into the lineup. This will grow especially difficult once Atlanta's outfield is back to full health and there is less of a need to put Dubon in the outfield.

With this in mind, Kim must understand that his career averages need to be met at the plate while playing a capable level of defense to remain in the starting lineup. Kim is a career .242 hitter with his best season at the plate coming back in 2023 with the San Diego Padres when the infielder hit .260 and stole 38 bases while driving in 60. This is the version of the infielder Atlanta needs to show up if there isn't going to be a serious debate about playing time emerging.
