If there is one move that would once again have Atlanta Hawks believing in the franchise, it would be a trade for Bucks star Giannis Antetokounmpo. After yet another playoff flameout, it appears clear that an aging franchise has missed its window and might be forced to part ways with the star. However, where things grow a bit complicated is the fact that the Bucks traded their first-round picks to give the team a better chance at contention. This isn't as simple as trading Giannis and tanking for a reset.
Milwaukee has zero reason to attempt to tank, demanding that any potential trade package offer not only picks but players, giving the team a chance to compete.
This is where the Hawks could have a decided advantage in any potential trade negotiations. Atlanta has a great group of young talent that needs a leading force to be able to take the next step. Any of this core aside from Dyson Daniel and Trae Young should be up for grabs. This includes star forward Jalen Johnson, who has dealt with injury concerns. With this in mind, Atlanta's trade package must be built around its second-best scorer and future picks.
Hawks Pay High Price to Add Giannis Antetokounmpo in Mock Trade Scenario
Georges Niang is included in the deal only for contract reasons, with the Bucks receiving two protected picks as well as a selection in this year's draft. Add in the promising talent of Johnson and Okongwu, and from a player's standpoint, it will be a difficult package to beat. Johnson is just starting to flash his true potential and would fit well with the rest of Milwaukee's pieces. As painful as it might be to part ways with the young star, the Hawks aren't adding one of the best players in the league without him in the deal.
It is already a stretch to believe the Bucks wouldn't require Dyson Daniels to part ways with a franchise-altering star. However, in today's league, matching contracts and having picks to trade is an incredibly difficult path to walk. As many teams that will have an interest in Giannis Antetokounmpo joining the lineup, there are only going to be a handful in a position to compete for the veteran.
For Atlanta, the deal instantly puts you in the conversation as the Eastern Conference's top team. The Hawks would be joined by the Knicks, Pacers, and Cavs in this conversation while holding the best player of any of the four teams. No question, if the Hawks have a chance to get a similar deal done, the front office cannot hesitate.
