Atlanta Hawks fans hoping for a chance to land one of the offseason's clear top four prospects were severely disappointed this past weekend when it was the 8th selection the franchise landed. It remains a great trade with New Orleans that landed this pick; however, there is no denying the level of frustration that the Hawks landed outside the top four and fell to the point that the player they are expected to select would be a high-end rotational option and not a franchise-altering player.
Dyson Daniels, Franz Wagner, Obi Toppin, and Jaxson Hayes are recent examples of the types of players that this pick might garner. With this in mind, the Hawks must realize that the idea of the pick likely has more value than the selection itself. Atlanta must view this as an opportunity to get a deal done ahead of this year's draft class.
The Hawks have a solid core in place that is lacking a star presence in the starting lineup. As great of a talent as Jalen Johnson might be, it was exposed in the series loss against the New York Knicks that the young forward isn't the type of player who is going to take over or demand the basketball.
Holding the 8th overall pick gives the Hawks a potential trade chip in chasing this needed star presence. While the trade market isn't yet clear, what cannot be ignored is that Atlanta needs to move away from the 8th selection and utilize it to help add an established player.
Hawks Lottery Frustration Sets up Needed Offseason Trade
Atlanta should have an eye on Giannis Antetokounmpo and Jaylen Brown, who have both been speculated as potential fits for the Hawks. Either player fixes the biggest issue the franchise is facing, and the 8th pick could be an important piece of getting a deal done to land one of these stars.
For the Hawks, the goal in the 2026 offseason needs to be looking to add a star presence, not add another draft pick. The Hawks must build on the momentum of the past season and realize it is more valuable to have a presence that is capable of taking the last shot in a game, and fans have reason for confidence that this player has a chance to outduel any opposing star.
Free agency offers very limited options with Austin Reaves, LeBron James, and C.J. McCollum as the top names expected to hit the market. While any of this trio could be viewed as a potential fit in Atlanta, the better path is utilizing the team's 8th pick and a package built to land a star and answer the clear problem that the series loss to the Knicks present. The Hawks don't have a primary scorer, and to win games in May and June, this must change, or history is destined to repeat itself in the 2026-27 season.
