It is some elusive good Atlanta Braves news with the update that infielder Nacho Alvarez is preparing for a rehab assignment. After spending the majority of the season dealing with an injury, the shortstop could finally play in Atlanta's starting lineup. While it is far from clear whether or not the lost franchise will give Alvarez a shot this season, it appears impossible not to at least offer the infielder a look.

Current starter Nick Allen was one of the best early stories of Atlanta's season. The former Athletics top prospect heated up in the first weeks of the season and gave the Braves enough confidence to part ways with Orlando Arcia. However, as the season has worn on, the offensive production has faded, with Allen's offensive production continuing to fall in the wrong direction. This does open the door for the Braves to explore making a change if Alvarez impresses in his rehab assignment.

Nacho Alvarez Should Have a Clear Path to the Braves' 2025 Starting Lineup

To be fair to Allen, the defense and base running have both still been stellar from the Atlanta infielder. The issue is the team's free fall that has landed them contending in the bottom of the National League. Any possible answers or long-term solutions are going to be needed in a season that has quickly gotten out of hand.

While Alvarez struggled in his debut for Atlanta last season, there is still a level of belief that the infielder could play into Atlanta's long-term plans. If the season continues to circle the drain, there simply isn't a reason not to find out if there is a possible long-term option at the position already in Atlanta's system.

Allen can still be an option with the team demoting Luke Williams to make room for Alvarez. The only potential hiccup is if the infielder isn't able to take a step forward at the plate. Williams is an established offensive liability but brings a lot of value due to his speed on the bases and ability to play different positions.

Regardless, it is a touch of good news for Atlanta to see the infielder on his way back to the field. A much-needed distraction from Atlanta's continual refusal to play anything close to winning baseball.
