Failed Atlanta Braves reliever Wander Suero is continuing to struggle as the New York Mets announced they have designated the veteran for assignment on Tuesday, according to MLB Trade Rumors. Suero's stint only lasted five days, as it appears the Mets are following in the path of the Braves by turning the page.
Suero being DFA'd sets the stage for Jose Siri's return to the Mets' lineup. The ex-Brave was simply an insurance policy in case the Mets needed to eat innings with an option they didn't care if they put too much mileage on ahead of the postseason; one that New York will be a part of while Atlanta is frustratingly reduced to sitting at home after attempting to play the role of spoiler in the final weeks of the season.
Former Braves RHP Wander Suero Dumped by Mets After 5 Days
Suero pitched 6.1 innings in Atlanta and gave up eight earned runs in that time to the tune of an 11.37 ERA. Reminder that this is the same bullpen that jettisoned Craig Kimbrel, who now has a 0.00 ERA in seven outings with the Houston Astros, who are in playoff positioning. The Braves cannot get out of their own way this season, and that is perfectly reflected by Suero and the questionable bullpen decisions throughout the 2025 season.
The lack of bullpen depth is one of the biggest factors in that, with the franchise failing to add any pieces of note. Arguably, Kimbrel was the best piece the Braves added, and they allowed the veteran one road inning before moving in a different direction. This, along with the endless stream of failing relievers, has left the Braves' front office very much in question.
It is a debate whether general manager Alex Anthopoulos & Co. has failed the Atlanta fan base or if limited spending imposed by ownership is what is derailing the team. No matter the answer, it is far from a hot take that things must drastically change in the early offseason.
Suero serves as an example of this in the fact that the reliever was once a primary option for the Braves, who are desperate for any level of capability to eat innings. Suero wasn't ready for the role, and both the Braves and Mets have quickly turned the page from the struggling righty.
It is fair to wonder if this is the last fans will see of Suero after the consistent struggles at the minor and big-league levels. There is a possibility the former Brave has reached the end of the road in what would be an underwhelming career.
