The Atlanta Falcons were surprised a season ago when rookie James Pearce Jr. was far ahead of schedule, putting together a breakout year one. Pearce finished with 10.5 sacks and consistent highlight plays in big spots. However, quietly rookie Jalon Walker showed his own signs of life, putting together a rookie year that clearly is setting up breakout expectations for the 2026 season. Walker finished with 5.5 sacks, 29 pressures, a batted pass, and a pair of forced fumbles, showing off his explosive ability.
There is a lot to love about Walker that makes it clear he is set for a breakout season. Near the top of this list is a relentless motor that refuses to give up on a play and pushes the pedal the same no matter the score. Add in the clear progression that the Georgia product made throughout the 2025 season, and there is every reason to believe we are set up to have a breakout season, giving Atlanta's defense a bright future.
What makes Walker a bit different from Pearce is the higher level of flexibility. Atlanta lost Kaden Elliss in free agency, giving the second-year defender a chance to step into a bit of a new role and consistently be put in a position to keep the offense under pressure.
Falcons Putting Jalon Walker in Position to Set Up Potential Breakout Season
Walker can be utilized in so many different positions, able to play the middle of the field or simply play a true edge position. This ability is going to take a year two leap in Jeff Ulbrich's defense, and that is becoming increasingly clear. Double-digit sacks are a fair expectation, while Walker should be expected to line up in a number of positions and utilized as a unique defensive weapon.
This turns back the clock to Walker's college seasons with Georgia, as the defender would be a pivotal piece of some of Kirby Smart's best defensive units, lining up consistently in different positions. This is the type of role the Falcons appear to be setting up, bolstering expectations of a breakout season.
Walker was selected before Pearce and remains the more unique weapon, even if the latter is already more accomplished at this level. No question, the Falcons should have high expectations with Walker having the ceiling of being a stabilizing defender for years to come. One set to remind fans why he was selected so highly two years ago.
