The Atlanta Braves made the questionable decision to part ways with Jorge Mateo to make room for Ha-Seong Kim to rejoin the roster after missing time with a hand injury. It appeared to be a decision that wasn't based on performance but chose to prioritize the money spent on Kim over what had been undeniably a better performance from Mateo. This leaves it as little surprise that the shortstop found another Major League opportunity, signing with the Tampa Bay Rays on a Major League deal.
Mateo now has a chance to contribute in a bench role for another contender and offer a skill set that the Braves could still benefit from. It is exciting for Mateo to have the opportunity and should give the infielder a chance to continue this season's momentum and land a further role in the 2027 offseason.
However, there is no denying that this points to what has been a mistake by the Braves, who opted to chose the more expensive expiring contract to keep. Neither player is expected to make an impact next season, with the offensive limitations of both players being undeniable. What offset this for Mateo was early-season timely hitting and flashing consistent speed that would've been valued in a potential postseason run.

Kim has stayed primarily on the bench since the Braves made this move, with manager Walt Weiss utilizing Jim Jarvis and Mauricio Dubon at the position. It is difficult to see this changing unless Kim gets enough opportunities to prove that the 2026 struggles are firmly behind him. Only two at-bats since the deadline decision have been offered, and Kim is hitless in both of these appearances.
There simply is no way around the fact that the biggest infield offseason signing has been a bust. This fits in with years of struggle at the position, with Orlando Arcia and Nick Allen both being recent answers for a franchise that hasn't been able to find a long-term solution since Dansby Swanson signed a top-dollar contract with the Chicago Cubs.
Mateo offered no shot of solving this issue, but was still a clear bench contributor who gave Weiss a base running weapon and an offensive wildcard. Now, Mateo will offer the Rays this skill set and continue what has been a solid season for a player who still should be a member of Atlanta's roster.
