Looking at the current Atlanta Braves roster, it would be far easier to list who hasn't performed below expectations. However, there has been a clear difference between the Braves, who are simply struggling to start the year, and those who have fallen from grace. The bad news for Atlanta fans is the fact that the Braves simply lack other tenable options at nearly every position. A lot of this will be fixed as the team gets healthy and star players return to normal production.
However, there are some pieces that could find themselves playing their way out of a starting role. At least a handful of Braves are clearly on the fringes of the roster or in danger of being benched. Starting with Atlanta's starting shortstop, who appears to now be in a platoon situation.
1. Orlando Arcia
Is Arcia still Atlanta's starting shortstop? The answer to this isn't clear, with Brian Snitker starting the season by defending his player and shrugging off the spring struggles. This was further clouded when Atlanta made it clear that Arica wouldn't start every game and that backup infielder Nick Allen would be the relief option.
This hasn't been how things have played out with the team platooning the two infielders. There hasn't been a clear strategy for Atlanta's decision other than realizing both are potential liabilities at the plate. Allen is the superior infielder, while Arcia is the more established hitter. Arcia's best production has come either as a utility option or to begin the 2023 season when the veteran first took over for Dansby Swanson.
For the first time in two years, it is now clear the Braves understand they have a problem at short. One that isn't likely to be solved by Arcia or Allen. While we are far removed from the trade deadline, it is clear the Braves will be looking for an answer. One that is likely going to end with Arcia back on the bench in a utility role. The infielder has been on borrowed time for much of the last season, and with the current struggles, they can no longer excuse the hole in their lineup.
