The Atlanta Braves have a long list of needs this offseason, problems that aren't going to be fixed in the bargain aisles of free agency. It is very possible that an increasingly cheap franchise is going to look to part ways with failing players. Sean Murphy unquestionably falls under this umbrella. struggling badly down the stretch of the season and posting back-to-back seasons where reaching the Mendoza line was an uphill battle. With the emergence of Drake Baldwin, the veteran is becoming increasingly expendable.
Setting up this week's first offseason signing of note with catcher Austin Nola signing on a minor league deal. Nola had been a consistent contributor before injuries appeared to derail his offense and left him searching for a Major League landing spot the last two years. Extensive time spent in the minor leagues hasn't appeared to fix the offensive issues, but the Braves are known for the ability to get the most out of reclamation projects. Nola is a great defensive option and perhaps the ideal backup behind Baldwin if the franchise decides to turn the page away from Murphy.
Braves Latest Signings Increases Chances of an Offseason Trade of Catcher Sean Murphy
If the Braves are going to continue to start Baldwin at catcher and utilize the DH position for another impact addition, it makes sense to save money behind the young starter. Murphy is far too highly paid to be a backup and unreliable offensively to plug into the DH spot. With this in mind, Nola could be the perfect compromise. A cheap backup who is rarely going to be expected to start throughout the 2026 season.
At the very least, it gives the Braves a bit more flexibility at the position. For Nola, it is an opportunity to turn his career around and perhaps play a contributing role as a reserve.
For Baldwin, it makes the most sense to take over catching duties full-time based on the contract situation and promise defensively. It is safe to say that Murphy's contract hasn't played out as expected and that it could very well be time to turn the page.
The flip side of this is arguing that the Braves are going to look to DH Baldwin, and Nola is simply depth to allow both Murphy and Baldwin to consistently play on the same nights. While this is a possibility, it isn't the best path forward if the franchise is going to pinch pennies. There needs to be a far more focused effort to shed Murphy's salary, looking to make the needed improvements.
