Atlanta Falcons fans have continued to appreciate the stability and playmaking that Jessie Bates has provided since joining the franchise. Despite being a part of a number of underwhelming defensive units, the level of play from Bates hasn't declined. This is something the league has taken note of with a recent ESPN poll ranking the top safeties throughout the league. This was decided by a poll from league execs, coaches, and scouts. Bates came in as the fifth-ranked safety in the league, pointing to an upcoming contract decision.

Bates is on the final year of a four-year deal he signed with the Falcons and is clearly deserving of an extension. While there is a slight regression in the defender's level of speed, his ability to see the play and put himself in a position to make up for this loss of burst is obvious. In the ranking, it was noted by an unnamed league source, "Instincts and ball skills have allowed him to play at a high level for a long time."

This is telling and speaks to the fact that Bates is aging well and needs to be re-signed. Atlanta getting a deal done ahead of the 2026 season would be ideal. It takes away a huge question in Jeff Ulbrich's defense and makes sure that a surge in play from the safety doesn't spike the cost of a potential re-signing.

Jessie Bates Latest Ranking Points to Obvious Pressure on Falcons to Re-sign Key Veteran

Consider the fact that only Kyle Hamilton, Derwin James, Xavier McKinney, and Brian Branch were ranked ahead of the Falcons defensive back. Each of these safeties is at the top of their respective games and have enjoyed far more defensive support from their respective coaching staffs and rosters. No question, what Bates has accomplished cannot be underrated and is deserving of an extension.

Parting ways with Kirk Cousins has opened up a level of cap space that has already allowed a new contract for Drake London and Kyle Pitts. Bijan Robinson is obviously the team's highest priority, but time should be made for locking down Bates and keeping the defensive backfield duo of the veteran and Xavier Watts in place.

Atlanta needs to find a sense of urgency, extending the veteran an additional 2-3 seasons, understanding his importanceance understanding his importance in Jeff Ulbrich's defense. If the Falcons are getting ready to turn the corner, Bates has more than earned a spot even as the safety ages; his value simply remains too high.
