One of the more enjoyable stories to watch unfold in the first two weeks of the Atlanta Braves' 2026 season has been Mauricio Dubon's hot start. The utility player was forced into the starting lineup due to an offseason injury to Ha-Seong Kim, who isn't expected to return until May, leaving plenty of time for Dubon to make his case to stay in the Atlanta lineup. Thus far, Dubon is doing just that, putting up impressive numbers, collecting 15 hits and driving in nine runners while playing truly superb defense.

What makes Dubon such an interesting piece moving forward is that if this level of play continues, the Braves will have to make a tough decision. If Kim were ready to return today, there is little question that Dubon would keep his starting spot, but likely shift from shortstop to left field, allowing Kim to rejoin the lineup. If there has been one area of offensive concern for the Braves, it is left field, where Jurickson Profar was supposed to be starting.

Instead, the Braves have moved forward with a trio of Eli White, Mike Yastrzemski, and Dubon starting in left. Yastrzemski has offered underwhelming production, hitting .211 so far this season, while White has been unable to reach the Mendoza line. It is important to note that there is a long time for this change before Kim's potential return to the Atlanta lineup, but for now, Dubon has made his case to remain a starter.

Mauricio Dubon Leaving Braves No Choice but to Keep Him in the Starting Lineup

What makes this extremely plausible is Dubon's ability to play all over the infield as well as man left field. The Braves can maximize the utility player's ability to give their starters regular days off while remaining a starter himself. This is the ideal path if the elite offensive contributions continue and Dubon offers the high-level defense he has flashed thus far.

With that said, it is important to note that much can change in the next month of the season, and Kim's offensive performance will go a long way in determining this answer as well. Manager Walt Weiss has made it clear with his early-season actions that this is a team looking to win and not concerned about whose paycheck might suggest they start.

Giving his stars early days off and shuffling the lineup to lean on whoever has the hot hand has proven the manager isn't afraid to take risks and keep the best options in the Atlanta lineup. This is great news for Dubon, who now has a clear path to being a contributor for one of the National League's top contenders. This makes his performance something to keep a close eye on as we continue to move closer to Kim's potential return.
