From allappearances the Atlanta Falconsare tanking with no intention of taking the 2026 season seriously. You simply cannot take away any other conclusion from how the season has been managed and the collective lack of urgency. With that said, Michael Penix Jr. will start on Thursday night given one last chance to prove he is the future of the franchise. After two seasons of being in and out of the Atlanta lineup alongside Kirk Cousins, the third-year signal caller is entering his last opportunity.
If Penix cannot prove he can stay healthy and show consistent signs of being a franchise quarterback, aggressive moves are going to be made. Looking at next year's draft class, there is no shortage of potential prospects the Falcons could attempt to target in hopes of turning the franchise around.
Bringing in Tua Tagovailoa as well as Kirk Cousins three years ago shows a lack of complete trust in Penix. Adding to this fact is a new regime under Matt Ryan, a front office that now has little ties to Penix and can easily wash their hands of the quarterback if this year's performance isn't far more consistent and elevating the Falcons into the NFC South conversation.
Objectively, the NFC South is a pathetic division, and the Falcons have the talent to compete, with head coach and quarterback being the obvious glaring question marks. If you cannot compete with Penix in a wide open division in the quarterback's third season, it is very unlikely his future holds anything besides a clipboard and the sideline.

Penix has shown flashes of capability, but over two seasons in limited action has managed only 12 touchdowns in comparison to six interceptions. The production hasn't been elite, and there isn't a defining win or moment fans can point to as proof that Penix is a franchise answer. With this in mind, Thursday's game is unquestionably going to be a defining one for the quarterback.
One that starts a campaign to decide whether he is the future of the franchise or a league afterthought spending the rest of his career as a backup option. It doesn't help matters that the quarterback is returning from yet another serious knee injury and will need time to settle back in after having limited camp reps and no preseason action.
It will be an uphill battle, but one that is undeniably possible, as Penix has defied expectations throughout much of his career. Falcons fans are simply left hoping the quarterback can save what appears to be an already lost 2026 season.
