The 2025 offseason is officially here following Super Bowl 59. The Philadelphia Eagles beat the Kansas City Chiefs 40-22 and now the focus has shifted over to offseason planning.

During the 2024 season, the Falcons finished with an 8-9 record, narrowly missing the playoffs in the first season under Raheem Morris.

Last March, Atlanta and quarterback Kirk Cousins agreed on a four-year, $180 million deal that included $100 million guaranteed. After starting in 14 games, the Falcons decided to bench Cousins in favor of rookie quarterback Michael Penix Jr.

That sparked speculation on whether Cousins will be around for the 2025 season, and the latest report indicates that a divorce could be in the cards.

NFL Network reporters Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero reported that Cousins and the organization haven't discussed his future with the team.

Falcons News: Kirk Cousins and Atlanta Haven’t Discussed Future

"Sources say there has been no communication between the two sides since the season ended, and really, there is nothing to discuss," Rapoport and Pelissero wrote.

It's clear that Penix Jr. is the guy of the future and the Cousins experiment failed miserably. The relationship between Cousins and the franchise didn't start on the right foot. When Atlanta selected Penix Jr. with the eighth overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, they didn't alert Cousins about the move until they were on the clock.

They were hoping that Cousins would be able to bounce back from a torn Achilles and give them a nice stopgap while Penix Jr. learned on the bench. Unfortunately, it didn't pan out like that.

Cousins threw for 3,508 yards with 18 passing touchdowns and 16 interceptions. The 36-year-old has a $40 million cap hit in 2025 and the Falcons would get slammed with a $65 million dead cap hit if they move on from him.

That's a big number, but it's obvious he isn't in their long term plans. The Falcons have gone over a month without speaking with Cousins, giving a clear indication they are planning to move on from him after just one season.
