The firsttwo weeks of Atlanta Falcons training camphas been defined by a quarterback battle that has been reduced to debating who is the healthier player. Both Michael Penix Jr. and Tua Tagovailoa have been limited, with Penix's limitations appearing to have been caution from the Falcons when it comes to a piece they previously believed was a franchise answer.
However, the decision-makers who embraced Penix are gone, with Matt Ryan and new head coach Kevin Stefanski now in positions of power that seem to have changed the perception of Penix. This was evidenced by a reportfrom ESPN's Ian Rapoport,speaking on the network and sharing, "My general feel is that Tua will be the week one starter for the Atlanta Falcons.."
Every insider or team report that emerges appears to point to this same trend with the expectation being that Tagovailoa is going to take over as the starter. It is very similar to how the franchise opted to bring in Kirk Cousins and went with the veteran in hopes of winning rather than exploring whether or not Penix has the potential to be a longterm answer.
Two years in and questions around Penix continue with consistency and health leaving reason to wonder if the third-year signal caller is capable of holding down a starting role. It appears that Ryan and Stefanski are leaning towards one clear answer as the franchise is opting to embrace Tagovailoa in hopes of the veteran erasing last year's struggles.
Falcons Continue to Face Predictions of Starting Tua Tagovailoa in Week 1
Tagovailoa is only going to work in Atlanta if the quarterback follows in the footsteps of Sam Darnold or Baker Mayfield breathing life into a dead career. It isn't off the table, but it is hard to believe it is the most likely outcome based on the quarterback's recent performance and injury history. The Falcons are likely going with the veteran, but this doesn't mean we won't see Penix in the lineup.
Looking at how often both players have dealt with serious injuries it is very much on the table we see both starters at some point in the 2026 season. It is the reality of the quarterback room that the Falcons have willingly built with no clear fallback.
For Tagovailoa, it appears the quarterback simply needs to make the competition close to hold onto the starting job. The decision might not yet be official but all the signs appear to point to it already being made.
