The Atlanta Braves have faced consistent questions when it comes to the rotation and how to make room for a wealth of options. A demotion for JR Ritchie and moves to the bullpen for Didier Fuentes and Reynaldo Lopez have served as the team's current answers. However, there are more difficult decisions upcoming with both Spencer Schwellenbach and Hurston Waldrep working closer towards their respective returns. It serves as a reminder of the uphill battle that veteran Martin Perez continues to face amid a surprising 2026 season.

Perez was first brought in as emergency depth and worked his way into a start due to injuries. All the veteran southpaw has done since is embrace any role the Braves have thrown his way, working out of the bullpen and offering consistent production in the rotation.

The aging starter can be relied on to complete five innings each and every start, finding a way to keep Atlanta's offense within reach. While this isn't a postseason-level arm, it has incredible value in the regular season, giving the current rotation a consistent innings-eating option.

While the styles of the players are far different, it is a reminder of Charlie Morton's later seasons with the Braves, offering a chance to consistently eat innings even if the results weren't always pretty. Perez has this same quality in the fact that he is a gamer and always looking for a way to get the most out of each start.

Braves Continue to Appreciate Underrated Contributions from Martin Perez

Perez has four wins on the season and has offered an ERA of 3.02, pointing to the incredible consistency the Braves have gotten from what was a roster afterthought. The left-hander was even designated for assignment earlier in the season, but quickly returned and has simply refused to go away when it comes to competing for a spot in the rotation.

For the Braves, the upcoming demotion from the rotation appears to be a race between Grant Holmes and Perez, with each having their own unique argument for why they are deserving of a roster spot. It will be entertaining to watch how Atlanta decides to fill out the rotation and manage its starts the rest of the way.

At the very least, Perez has done more than enough to stick in Atlanta's bullpen, offering consistent production in whatever role is asked of him. The Braves unquestionably have a welcome problem that Perez continues to make more difficult, continuing an impressive 2026 season.
