It took little time for former Atlanta Braves shortstop Orlando Arcia to find his next landing spot, signing a deal with the Colorado Rockies. Why the former Brave would choose the worst team in the league as his landing spot is a bit of a mystery. The only obvious explanation might be the organization being willing to offer Arcia playing time; competing teams simply can't. Regardless, it is a bit surprising to see Arcia's landing spot.
The shortstop could've offered a contender value as a defensive replacement at the bottom of the bench. However, the shortstop might have valued playing time over the chance to contend while being unable to play a consistent role. Arcia signaled the page turn by posting a heartfelt goodbye to the Braves and the fans.
Orlando Arcia Thanks Atlanta Braves Organization and its Fans
Arcia taking the time to call out how supportive Atlanta fans have been seems a fitting end to the infielder's chapter with the team. After having an incredible first half of the 2023 season, Arcia's tenure with the team is going to be remembered for the consistent offensive frustrations. This is, in many ways, a bit unfair when you consider the position the organization pushed the infielder into.
The veteran was at his best when given the chance to play a utility role. This is where Arcia thrived with the team before Dansby Swanson signed with the Chicago Cubs in free agency. Asking the utility player to replace a franchise building block was never going to end well. Arcia was set up for failure in a position the shortstop simply couldn't fill.
Still, the veteran has been an important part of the organization, and seeing how much Atlanta and its fans meant to the infielder drives this home. For the Braves, this leaves all of the pressure on Nick Allen to continue his current level of production. Atlanta now lacks any clear fallback options, putting the pressure completely on the young infielder.
Arcia will now get a chance to serve a larger role with the Rockies and look to rebuild value ahead of hitting free agency at the end of the season. It was the right move for both sides and opens the door for Atlanta to perhaps chase a splashy addition for the role either ahead of this year's trade deadline or during the 2026 offseason.
