There was a time when Atlanta Hawks fans could easily argue Clint Capela was among the league's underpaid defenders. Especially with prices skyrocketing for role players, Capela's deal appeared to be market value or just below for quite some time. The veteran's ability to protect the bucket and serve as a lob threat for Trae Young was a welcome addition after years of underperforming centers. However, as the league has continued to develop and Capela has aged, there is no way around the fact that the Hawks were overpaying for the center this past season.

Defensively, it was clear the veteran has slowed a step, and the lack of shooting was often a liability. The free-throw shooting remains a problem, and the Hawks have transitioned to a younger center who gives the team far more defensive flexibility. Capela was being paid starter money while being far better suited to be the second option as a defensive and rebounding presence off the bench. Capela was overpaid, and it is okay to admit it is time for the franchise to turn the page.

Clint Capela Needs to Take a Pay Cut to Stay on Hawks' Roster

With Capela poised to hit free agency, the problem has taken care of itself. The team was able to shed De'Andre Hunter's salary as well, opening up the possibility of adding a second scorer alongside Trae Young during the 2025 offseason. Capela shouldn't be re-signed unless it is a deal that is on Atlanta's terms and pays the veteran at his current ability.

For Atlanta, the focus needs to be on trading Georges Niang and looking to add defensive pieces around its current core. Both Trae Young and Dyson Daniels should be considered the only players who are untouchable in a pivotal offseason.

The mediocrity the organization has been mired in for the last four seasons cannot continue to be accepted. It starts with finding a second established scorer and being willing to move away from regressing pieces. Capela fits this second qualifier and should be landing with a new team unless the veteran is willing to take a serious discount.
