The biggest story of the Atlanta Falcons 2026 offseason was the addition of Tua Tagovailoa and the competition it signaled with Michael Penix Jr., a competition that has yet to really get started, as ESPN's Adam Schefter noted this week that Penix is yet to be cleared. Last year's Week 1 starter cannot yet return to the practice field, and while this was given a positive spin, it cannot be avoided that it appears Atlanta is setting the stage for Tagovailoa to take over as the Week 1 starter.
It is important to note that we still have both training camp and preseason action with this period offering far more snaps than we've seen thus far. Penix still is going to have a chance to flip the script, but it appears that Tagovailoa has the inside track as the healthier option and has veteran experience that gives obvious advantages in a competition.
Tagovailoa has a checkered injury history of his own with it being very much on the table, we see both players in the 2026 season due to injuries. Penix has a history of knee injuries, while Tua has dealt with concussion issues that have put his career into question more than once. Still, the veteran has put up great numbers in years past and appears to be the avenue the franchise is leaning.
Falcons Latest Injury Update Points to Tua Tagovailoa Starting 2026 Season as Starter
It makes sense from the perspective of a new front office and coaching regime wanting to win now. Tagovailoa has led a team to a playoff berth, while Penix has yet to show he is capable of being a starting option for a full season. The counterargument to this is pointing out that Penix is the team's best path to finding a franchise quarterback, with Tagovailoa being a short-term answer at best.
Opting to start Tagovailoa is in many ways similar to the idea of adding Kirk Cousins and drafting Penix in the same year. Both of these decisions point to a lack of trust in last year's starter and make it clear that the injury serves as yet another advantage in a competition that is leaning heavily in the favor of Tagovailoa.
Penix's only chance of changing this path is putting together a strong camp and preseason that clearly puts him far above Tagovailoa. Otherwise, Atlanta fans should prepare themselves for an upcoming 2026 season of watching Tagovailoa as the team's starter.
