The clock has started for Atlanta Braves southpaw AJ Smith-Shawver after pitching a simulated game on Thursday. Atlanta's rotation appears likely to get a surprise contributor as Smith-Shawver went down in 2025, and it appeared a possibility that the talented starter was going to miss the entire season. While a return is yet to officially happen, it seems that by the end of July or the start of August, Smith-Shawver could be back in the rotation if things go according to plan.
With this in mind, fans should keep a close eye on the young pitcher as he starts a long rehab process. Not only does Smith-Shawver need to be protected as he works his way back, but the lefty is going to need time to stretch back out and offer longer innings. It seems that this is going to be needed from the current state of Atlanta's rotation.
Bryce Elder and Martin Perez have both shown signs of recent regression, while Spencer Strider is out for an unknown amount of time. Losing these three sources of production took what was a consistent rotation and has put the team's future into question as to how the rotation will be managed moving forward. Smith-Shawver has a clear path to contributing and potentially becoming an important piece down the stretch of the season.
Braves Could Soon Lean on AJ Smith-Shawver as Left-Hander is Working Towards Return
Smith-Shawver returning gives the Braves a chance to end the season with a rotation that potentially features the lefty alongside Chris Sale, Hurston Waldrep, Spencer Strider, and whoever proves capable of holding onto the fifth and final spot. Grant Holmes appears to be setting himself up for a clear demotion, while Spencer Schwellenbach's potential return remains incredibly unclear.
All of this adds up to make it undeniably clear that Smith-Shawver not only has a path back into Atlanta's rotation but is a needed presence. One that has a chance to pitch postseason innings with a hot start. Atlanta's lack of clear postseason starting options is a potential weakness, and that could change as the team gets healthier or with a potential trade deadline move.
Regardless of which path the team walks, Smith-Shawver is going to get his chance to contribute as long as he remains healthy. The Braves simply need to be cautious when bringing back an incredibly talented pitcher and a starter who is still expected to have a bright future with the franchise.
