While the Atlanta Braves' search for a new manager continues, beat writer Mark Bowman provided a bit of clarity on names that were viewed as unlikely. Among these were current MLB Network analyst and former Atlanta infielder Mark DeRosa and former Braves catcher and Chicago Cubs manager David Ross. Hearing DeRosa ruled out isn't at all surprising when you consider how long he has been away from the game and the lack of experience. However, cold water being poured on Ross as an option is a bit of a surprise.

The former Cubs manager spent four seasons with Atlanta as a backup catcher. While it was a small sample size, he didn't take much time to become a fan favorite. The leadership in the clubhouse and ability to come up with surprise clutch hits quickly endeared the former catcher to the fan base and his teammates. With this in mind, it comes as a bit of a surprise that there isn't more steam in the young manager earning a second shot with his former team. Still, it is important to note the context of the comments.

Bowman notes that this isn't an indication that there is zero chance of Ross being hired. Rather, there has been no mention or viable sources indicating that this is the direction the Braves are looking. However, it is important to note here that there has been very little concrete in who Atlanta is considering or the extent of the search. This doesn't come as a surprise for a front office that rarely has leaks when getting ready to make a meaningful move.

For Ross, the former Brave deserves a second chance in a managing role. Looking around the league, it is easy to argue that there are a number of teams for which Ross would be an upgrade. One has to wonder if Bowman could simply be unaware of Atlanta's potential interest in the manager.

Regardless, the fan base will remain focused on the change in leadership, hopeful that it sparks meaningful change. The 2025 season was one marred with failure from the top down, leaving room for the Braves to be extremely careful with how it fills the role of Snitker.

The former manager will be switching into an advisory role, staying with the organization in a lesser role. In many ways, this is the best case scenario for a franchise that needed a reset. Of course, that appears unlikely to include Ross as Atlanta's exact target remains elusive.
