The Atlanta Braves' six-game win streak came to an end on Tuesday night with an 11-4 defeat against the Washington Nationals. While it is one game in a long season, the loss was set up by an ugly outing from Reynaldo Lopez, who has put together a string of outings that leave his future a bit in question. While judging one bad outing might seem harsh, the reality is that the Braves are facing an incredibly talented rotation and a wealth of options all pushing for five highly contested spots.
Lopez's struggles at this level are notable and could push the Braves to consider whether a bullpen demotion is on the table as the rotation continues to get healthier. This is after four straight starts in which Lopez has worked five innings or less, giving up 11 earned runs in 15.2 innings.
The right-hander has also given up nine walks over his last four starts, with six of these coming in the last 6.0 innings pitched. Manager Walt Weiss gave Lopez a quick hook, pulling the starter after only recording three outs.
This spared taking even more damage when it was clear Lopez was missing his spots badly and giving up hard contact in the strike zone. The last two outings just ahead of Spencer Strider's expected return are notable and perhaps give Martin Perez an outside chance to use Wednesday's start to make his case to remain in the team's rotation.
Braves Could Should Consider Demoting Reynaldo Lopez to Atlanta Pen if Struggles Continue
If Lopez has another bad outing, it wouldn't be shocking to see the franchise move the former reliever back to the bullpen. Atlanta's pen is far thinner after losing Raisel Iglesias to the injured list, and having Lopez as an option could be tempting. The same argument could be made for Grant Holmes, who hasn't been incredibly sharp over his last two outings.
No matter the outcome, it is a fun experience for Braves fans to sit back and enjoy having so many quality starting pitching options that every start can be taken this seriously. In fairness to Lopez, the pitcher has previously given strong production as a starter, recording a 1.99 ERA in 2024. Still, in a league focused on your most recent performance, there is no denying the recent struggles, which could lead to a possible demotion.
An already strong bullpen could benefit from Lopez, who has previously been a consistent producer in the role. No question, it will be interesting to see how the Braves navigate upcoming decisions that are being made more difficult thanks to the current level of performance from Atlanta's rotation.
