It isn't a coincidence that Ronald Acuña Jr.'s return to the Atlanta Braves starting lineup has signalled a recent surge from Ozzie Albies. While the infielder's return to form does predate the star's return, things have continued to improve as Acuña has joined the everyday lineup. The friendship and chemistry between the two players have been well established, it doesn't come as a surprise that the return of the star has helped bolster Albies' offensive performance. The improvement was needed for a player who was starting to raise questions about his future.
Now, Albies has spent the last two weeks being one of Atlanta's most reliable hitters and reminding fans of his offensive ability. This is the version of the veteran second baseman fans are used to seeing at the plate. It is fair to wonder how much impact last season's injuries and the absence of Acuña had on the Braves star. Regardless, it is refreshing to see a struggling hitter trending in the right direction. For much of the season, it has only been Austin Riley and Marcell Ozuna performing to expectations.
Ronald Acuña Jr.'s Return Helped Create a Drastic Turnaround for Braves Infielder Ozzie Albies
After falling dangerously close to the Mendoza line, Albies has raised his average to .241 and has an impressive hitting streak still active. While the numbers are still far from eye-popping, it was needed production for a struggling Atlanta lineup. So much of what has held this team back in recent weeks is a lack of consistency.
One game, the lineup might explode for double-digit runs against an above-average starter, only to turn around the next night and get nothing going until the game is out of reach. To say the offensive approach lacks consistency would be a vast understatement. All of this makes Albies' consistent production a much-needed change for Atlanta.
Being able to credit Acuña for helping with the change in production makes it all the more exciting. Even if it is simply the value of Albies having his friend back in the clubhouse and a needed energy in the lineup. It isn't a hot take to point out that without Acuña, this team is a bit dull, lacking edge or energy. Outside of rookie catcher Drake Baldwin, there isn't a lot to be excited about or players that have helped infuse the needed level of energy.
Acuña is a spark plug that this team badly needed and one Ozzie has clearly benefited from. Giving the fan base hope that perhaps the rest of the lineup will follow Albies' example and begin to figure things out.
