As the Atlanta Braves are off to a solid start in the 2026 season, one of the most surprising factors has been Ronald Acuña Jr.'s slow start.
The star outfielder has struggled to get on base, slashing .194/.318/.222 with two RBIs, seven walks, and seven strikeouts through 44 plate appearances. Despite that performance, the Braves are still at 6-4 on the year and are tied for the fifth-most runs (49) and fourth-most hits (87) in the league while ranking third in home runs (13).
While it would be ideal to see Acuña get off to a faster start, there is no reason for alarm for the early-season woes. The 2023 MVP has suffered a bit of early bad luck as well as failed to live up to expectations. However, everything about the outfielder's career suggests that this stretch should be an outlier.
Once Acuña starts producing at his typical levels, the Braves have a chance to be the league's most productive offense and be a clear contender in the National League East.
Ronald Acuña Jr.'s Performance Shouldn't Concern Braves Fans Yet
A lot of credit for the team's hot offensive start is due to a new coaching staff that has been unafraid to shuffle the lineup or use the team's newly rebuilt bench. There is so much more life in the Braves' lineup and a level of unpredictability that wasn't there under ex-manager Brian Snitker over the past two seasons.
Braves fans aren't going to have to wait long for Acuña to start rolling with the 10-game lull, simply setting the franchise up for an inevitable hot streak. The veteran is a career .288 hitter and a consistent source of power. It was also only last season when he mashed 21 HRs and 42 RBIs with his second-best OPS (.935) of the last five seasons.
Perhaps the most telling of a turnaround is that the lead-off hitter has been aggressive in the outfield and on the bases when it comes to utilizing his speed. Acuña appears to be healthier than ever, and if he remains that way, he could become a potential NL MVP threat as the season unfolds (+1000, T-2nd on FanDuel Sportsbook).
Whether it was making a running catch going towards the wall or swiping a base against Arizona, the speed is clearly present, and Acuña trusts his legs at a level Atlanta fans haven't seen since the 2023 season. All of this adds up to an inevitable breakout that should complete the lineup, giving the Braves a legitimate chance to compete for a World Series title this fall.
