There is simply no way around the fact that Murphy's trips to the plate have often been ugly and include swings at balls far out of the reasonable strike zone.
With this in mind, last night's breakout performance to help push the Braves past the Los Angeles Dodgers and capture the series felt far larger than simply four trips to the plate. It was a sign that perhaps the deal can still be salvaged and that the veteran is getting hot at the perfect moment.
Atlanta can now continue to justify putting this version of Murphy on the field and believing the results will change. While it was just one game, it is was in a huge spot that felt as if the stakes were reaching a postseason level of intensity. With that said, the Braves do have an interesting upcoming offseason decision to make based on the complete picture of the past three years and not simply one great game.
Braves Can't Help but Enjoy Sean Murphy's Breakout Night
If the results don't continue to drastically improve over the next few weeks, the Braves would be wise to begin searching in the offseason for any team willing to take on the reclamation project. You already have a wasted contract in Jurickson Profar and could look to dump both deals in the offseason ahead. This would free up around $30 million giving you the opportunity to add a star player for the same rate you're paying two pieces that have had no positive impact on the 2026 season.
Murphy will be appreciated for the impact the catcher had on a lethal 2023 offense, but the three years since have taken away the patience of Braves fans. This is what made Wednesday night's performance such a needed change and gave hope that perhaps Murphy is about to prove worthy of his current contract and help fuel the final month of the season.
No question, it was a great sign for the Braves and reason for excitement that perhaps the team can still find value in Murphy's deal. One that has clearly aged poorly and was overdue for a redemptive moment.
