TheAtlanta Braves have a difficult decisionto make when it comes to the future of Sean Murphy. The veteran catcher started out the month of September and ended August on a high note offering great power numbers and giving the bottom of Atlanta's lineup a needed surge. However, the last handful of games things have slid in the opposite direction with the veteran backstop going 0/12 and struggling to offer the productive at-bats of a week ago.
This makes it easy to begin to consider whether or not the Braves could explore moving of Murphy's $15 million deal in the offseason. Finding a team willing to take on the remainder of what has been a regrettable deal could prove more difficult than it seems at first glance. However, there is no debate the move needs to be attempted if the final weeks of the season don't offer the best version of Murphy.
Even if the veteran were to finish the season on a high note, there is still a conversation to be had as to whether or not a trade could be in the best interest of the Braves. No matter where you land, there is no question that the past three years have been a consistent frustration with Murphy hitting under the Mendoza line. The catcher is currently hitting .203, the highest average offered since the 2023 season, when the backstop was an important piece of the offense.
Braves Must Debate Future of Sean Murphy as Uneven 2026 Performance Continues
Trading Murphy would be unlikely to net anything of note in return, but simply a move to free up a bit of salary space. It is easy to argue that Atlanta should take this approach with Jurickson Profar and Mike Yastrzemski as well, with the trio combining to hand the Braves more than enough to pay for a star in free agency or from the trade market, getting one high-end bat rather than paying for three players who have been frustratingly inconsistent.
Murphy needs a strong close to the end of the season to take away this concern and perhaps a postseason moment or two if the trade discussion is going to die. The backstop simply hasn't done enough in his Braves tenure for the franchise not to consider bringing in a more affordable backup option and leaning on Drake Baldwin.
No matter the answer, fans will be keeping a close eye on Murphy throughout the end of the 2026 season, understanding the decisions that lie ahead and hoping the version of the catcher we watched a week ago appears once again.
