The Atlanta Braves are getting closer to Sean Murphy returning, as the veteran's rehab is off to a great start. Braves host Grant McAuley noted "C Sean Murphy caught nine innings again on Thursday for Triple-A Gwinnett and collected two more hits. It's his third straight multi-hit game. Murphy is now batting .438 on his current rehab assignment." It serves as a reminder of the potential of a catcher who has spent the last three seasons as a consistent source of frustration.
Murphy has hit below the Mendoza line each of the past two seasons and managed an underwhelming .071 average in only 14 at bats in the 2026 season. All of these struggles have been attached to consistent injury issues as well, making it unclear what a healthy version of the backstop might offer moving forward.
It gives the Braves a potential trade chip or a wildcard contributor, with the hope that the clock can be turned back to the 2023 season. Murphy hit .251 in the 2023 season, driving in 68 with 21 home runs, and played stellar defense. This version of the catcher would be an undeniable World Series push for a franchise clearly in need of offensive additions to a lineup that hasn't lived up to expectations.

Murphy returning to career norms would be a huge boost to the bottom of the lineup and help keep Drake Baldwin healthy. It is clear that Baldwin needs to be in the lineup every night, and this means consistently utilizing the young catcher as a designated hitter. The best version of Murphy makes this extremely easy and balances out a lineup that could badly use his contributions.
With that said, it has been three years since the catcher was a capable Major League hitter. This isn't easy to overlook, even with the injuries and lack of consistent reps in recent seasons. Murphy has run out of excuses, and there is simply a sliver of hope that the catcher can find his way back to the player he once was.
The rehab assignment and level of success is bolstering this hope and leaves Atlanta wondering what the future holds for the catcher. It will be interesting to watch how the Braves manage the situation and whether or not Murphy is able to play his way into the tightly managed lineup of manager Walt Weiss consistently.
