Sean Murphy's breakout stretch giving Braves obvious hope

The Atlanta Braves have to be thrilledwith a recent surge from Sean Murphy that has provided a level of production the franchise hasn't seen for long stretches over the last three seasons. It has been since the 2023 season that Murphy was able to provide consistent offensive production, and that has quickly dissipated with the last three seasons bringing nothing but injuries and frustrating play appearances that often came at the worst moments possible.

However, this has changed at the end of August with Murphy collecting seven hits in his final four apppearances in the month including two homers. The catcher is locked in in a way that fans haven't seen in recent years. This leaves hope that perhaps the veteran backstop is going on a tear that will bleed into the postseason and give the Braves a needed presence at the bottom of the lineup.

For Murphy, it would breathe life back into his career and give the Braves a reason to hold onto a $15 million contract that appeared an obvious salary dump two weeks ago. If the backstop has truly figured things out and can offer anything close to this level of production moving forward Atlanta will have the league's most elite catching duo.

Sean Murphy Shows Signs of Life as August Comes to a Close

It will be interesting watch how much Murphy makes it into the lineup over the final month as rosters have expanded and manager Walt Weiss works to keep his bench involved and starters fresh heading into the postseason. Murphy should have plenty in the tank after missing the bulk of the season with more injury issues. With this in mind, it is very much on the table that this is the version of the catcher we get moving forward.

Murphy is two years overdue for a hot streak and couldn't have picked a better time to help fuel Atlanta's offense. Having a consistent presence at the bottom of the lineup changes the ceiling of the team and gives Atlanta a level of postseason clarity as to how the lineup is going to shake out.

With that said, there is still a long month ahead, with Murphy needing to prove that this is the standard moving forward and not the outlier. There is hope that this is the case as the catcher's swing looks exactly as it did in the 2023 season over the last handful of games. Leaving every reason to believe this is what Murphy can be moving forward.
