Meanwhile, Strider and Waldrep are expected to be unlikely to return for the rest of the season, leaving Atlanta's current rotation as its options in a potential postseason series.
It is a bit infuriating coming off an undeniable collapse from Bryce Elder, and the remaining trio of options in Martin Perez, Grant Holmes, and Tyler Mahle all coming with their own fair share of concerns. Chris Sale having to be perfect and surprise postseason contributors emerging is now what it is going to take for the Braves to be able to go on a potential World Series run.
Considering the current talent rostered, it is far from impossible, but it remains incredibly frustrating, as the road didn't have to be this difficult. It doesn't matter what negotiations the Braves were involved in ahead of this past year's trade deadline; you have to be able to land the plane. this is especially the case when you're clearly a top National League contender and have a glaring weakness.

Atlanta simply needed to add one capable arm that can start a postseason series and give the franchise a level of confidence. Looking at the potential matchups with the Los Angeles Dodgers' loaded staff is comical after you get past the advantage of Sale. No question, the Braves fumbled a golden opportunity, and the continued injury frustrations point to this fact.
It will be interesting to watch how the rotation is navigated the rest of the way and whether or not Atlanta gets any of the aforementioned trio back. It appears far more likely that all three starters remain on the shelf, with the Braves playing for next season, understanding the value of having each of these pitchers healthy and returning as a viable rotational option.
Looking at the current rotation, it is fair to wonder if the franchise might consider multiple bullpen games throughout a potential postseason run. Whatever the decision, there is no way around the clear failure from Atlanta.
