The Atlanta Braves have continually put Michael Harris in the starting lineup despite the outfielder's offensive struggles. Harris was retired on three pitches in one important sequence early in Thursday's game, illustrating these frustrations. However, the flip side of this is an unreal play Harris made in center to save two runs. With a deep line drive destined to go over the wall, Harris ran it down, leaping to reach over the wall and bring it back.

It is the type of heroic play the incredible defender makes with insane regularity. This is why Harris is such a valuable piece for the Braves, even as he attempts to work his way through midseason offensive woes. It seemed the play inspired Harris offensively, with the outfielder coming up with a clutch two-out double to tie the game in the 8th.

Atlanta Braves Outfielder Michael Harris Carries Immense Value Despite Offensive Struggles

Perhaps saving the runs took some of the pressure off the outfielder. It has been clear Harris is pressing at the plate, and it was showing up in his results. To come up with such a huge defensive play and follow it up with a clutch hit was the perfect example of what the centerfielder brings to the roster.

Even if the offensive improvement in Thursday's game isn't a sign of things to come, Harris showed why he is never leaving the starting lineup. As long as the average is over the Mendoza line, the defensive value offsets any offensive liabilities. It was a two-run swing that could have easily ended the game in Philly's favor.

Instead, Harris made the play and allowed Atlanta a chance to climb back into it and have a chance at the end. Nothing better illustrates the value of the outfielder to this team and why his spot in the lineup remains safe.

For Atlanta, there is still hope that the offensive numbers improve with Harris nowhere near his career norms. It would be a helpful boost for a team that has dug an impossible hole as they attempt to climb back into the postseason race.
