We are far from regular-season reps, and already pundits andfans are utilizing Tua Tagovailoa's uglypreseason debut as evidence of the lost season ahead. Making fun of the Falcons and Tagovailoa has often been easy, and there is no denying the quarterback opened himself up to this; however, it is also misplaced, as the preseason has little value and can often lie with its results in either direction. Fans that think otherwise only need to look back at recent Atlanta history to remember how misleading the preseason can be.
Desmond Ridder's starting tenure was kicked off by a solid preseason performance that gave Atlanta fans hope for the year ahead. The signal caller would show off his ability in the preseason, taking advantage of vanilla defenses and having enough momentum that fans began to buy into the idea that Ridder could be a capable game manager moving forward.
It is obvious how this played out, as fans were severely disappointed, and Ridder has bounced around the league struggling to hang onto a third quarterback role pointing to how useless preseason reps proved to be. This isn't to say Tagovailoa played well or to discount last year's turnover tendencies that ended his time with the Miami Dolphins.
Rather, it is an attempt to slow down a level of criticism that truly isn't earned in a meaningless game. Tagovailoa has put up an incredible season in the past and proved capable of leading a team to the playoffs. These are traits that Atlanta has lacked at the quarterback position in recent memory, inviting a level of interest in whether or not Tagovailoa can find the best version of himself under Kevin Stefanski.
Falcons Rough Preseason Start Garners Obvious Overreaction to Tua Tagovailoa's Performance
In the 2023 season, Tagovailoa had 4,624 passing yards and 29 passing touchdowns, leading one of the league's more exciting offensive units. This isn't to say that this is the version of the quarterback Atlanta will receive, with the Dolphins turning to Malik Willis in the 2026 offseason due to injury and turnover concerns around Tagovailoa.
However, flaming the quarterback and the Falcons relentlessly based on a handful of preseason reps is a bit shortsighted. What should be taken away from the struggles is that Michael Penix Jr. is back in the quarterback contest and not a chance to poke fun at a quarterback whose resume should lend itself to not overreacting to one poor preseason performance.
It wasn't the results that the Falcons were hoping for, and this isn't meant to pretend that Atlanta's roster is a contender in a loaded NFC. Rather, it is pointing out the reality that the preseason often lies, and one bad game from Tagovailoa shouldn't be gaining such steam, and wouldn't if the Falcons hadn't made themselves easy targets over the last decade.
No question, Tagovailloa is still very much in the quarterback competition and should be given a bit of grace for one bad performance, understanding the larger body of work and needing time to adjust to a new system.
