The Atlanta Braves are getting ready for the series finale against the San Diego Padres, with arguably the biggest takeaway coming in game one. Once again, Grant Holmes was pulled before completing five innings, with the right-hander only managing one start that offered five innings or more since the end of May. Holmes gave up a lone run in the series opener on a Manny Machado homer, but things were clearly falling apart as the San Diego lineup was mounting a rally.

Manager Walt Weiss has continued to make it clear that no matter the pitch count or inning, he doesn't have faith in the ability of Holmes to get out of trouble. It is a telling management style that makes it undeniable Holmes needs to be moved into the team's bullpen. Early innings for Holmes are often productive, with things falling apart the second time through the lineup.

Hitters getting their second look at Holmes appear to have little problem making adjustments and putting pressure on the Atlanta starter. This is a trait that is going to put continual mileage on the Braves' bullpen and cost the team innings that a more capable starter would eat.

For Holmes, there has to be an understanding that the ultimate goal is a World Series run, and for that to happen, the bullpen must stay healthy and not be completely drained by the time September and October roll around.

Braves Have No Choice but to Demote Grant Holmes After Latest Start

Weiss having such a quick hook for Holmes makes it clear that the franchise can't continue on its current path. Even veteran Martin Perez has a longer leash and is able to get more out of his starts consistently. This paints a clear picture of Holmes being demoted to the team's bullpen and Hurston Waldrep stepping into a rotation spot.

It simply cannot continue at the current pace, as Holmes is more of an opener that offers a bit of length over a legitimate starting option. This is evidenced by how quickly Weiss pulls the veteran and the consistent inability to get deep in the game.

While there are a handful of clear roster concerns, none are currently more glaring after this series than the need to replace Holmes in the team's rotation. Thankfully, help is on the way with both Waldrep and Spencer Schwellenbach still expected to return in the 2026 season. Two players who both project to be clear upgrades over Holmes.
