Things got unexpectedly heated on Tuesday night with former Atlanta Braves World Series hero Jorge Soler taking exception to a pitch on the inside (h/t BarnHasSpoken2).
After a delayed response, Soler charged the mound where Braves starter Reynaldo Lopez awaited, and the two exchanged punches before Atlanta manager Walt Weiss delivered a perfect tackle (h/t MinSub4), taking Soler to the ground and helping de-escalate the heated situation.
It was a surprise to see Weiss the first to reach Soler and not Atlanta catcher Jonah Heim or any of the Braves' infield.
While it was a small moment in a very long season, it solidified Weiss as the perfect manager for Atlanta. He put his leadership into action, not hesitating or waiting for his players to sort things out, getting Soler to the ground and ending the brawl before things could've turned truly ugly.
Even Soler had a positive response to Weiss' decision, via MLB.com's Rhett Bollinger:
"We have a good relationship. I don’t think (Weiss) tried to do anything against me. We’re friends. I think he was just trying to protect me."Jorge Soler, Angels RF
Fans could point to this moment and compare it to when former manager Brian Snitker jumped to the defense of Ronald Acuna Jr. ahead of what was a great run of seasons for Atlanta. It served as a solidifying moment for the fanbase that Snitker was the right leader, helping set the tone and level of respect that the Braves would demand, eventually leading to a 2021 World Series title.
Walt Weiss Keeps Proving Braves Made the Correct Hire
Second baseman Ozzie Albies was interviewed at the end of the Braves broadcast and voiced that Weiss had his players back and they had his in return. This is a common sentiment not only among Atlanta players but also among a fan base that is now fully bought into a manager who has brought needed changes to the lineup and has now proven he won't hesitate to back up his players.
It should be noted that while Weiss didn't hesitate to charge into the fight and get Soler to the ground, he did so, attempting to calm tensions and protect his players. After Soler was taken to the ground, Weiss could be seen restraining Soler and attempting to talk down the former Atlanta outfielder.
Weiss is the exact leader that Atlanta needed to turn the culture and put the franchise back on track after a dismal 2025 season. For any fans left doubting this after the team's solid start, the manager's response and ability to act in a heated moment should be all that was needed to push them to the right side of the fence. It was a moment that will live on in brawl history and one that Weiss will be remembered for handling perfectly.
