The Atlanta Falcons have been given consistent reason for excitement around rookie receiver Zachariah Branch, with this past week's minicamp offering a notable highlight. Branch was running a deep route against A.J. Terrell and burned the accomplished corner catching a perfect spiral from Tua Tagovailoa to complete a play that gave Falcons fans hope that perhaps they have found a needed answer at the position.
After Drake London, there are nothing but questions with veterans Jahan Dotson and Olamide Zaccheaus being brought in during free agency as potential answers. For the Falcons, the hope is that Branch is able to become an elite second option while the veteran additions become the third and fourth targets at the position.
If this past week was any indication, this is a bet that appears to be working out in the team's favor. Branch leaps off the screen when watching minicamp highlights, with the elite speed and great hands being obvious reasons for excitement. However, it is important to note that the pass catcher is slightly built, leaving reason to wonder how Branch will hold up at the next level, taking NFL hits.
Still, Branch is doing everything you could reasonably hope at this point in the summer and giving hope to a fanbase in need of offseason wins. It is deeper than just one great rep against Terrell, but a consistent pattern of showing up in rookie minicamp and minicamp since joining the franchise.
Falcons Have Reason to Believe in Elite Potential of Branch After Strong Start
Looking at the team's current depth chart, Branch having 600-700 yards in his rookie season and being a consistent second option would be considered a huge win. London is clearly the primary target with Kyle Pitts and Bijan Robinson as featured weapons in the passing attack as well. This makes it clear that Branch isn't needed as a star presence, but a consistent producer who takes pressure off the team's top names.
There is no doubting that the speed is there to translate into consistent chances with this level of quickness, creating natural space. Whether it is Tua Tagovailoa or Michael Penix Jr. throwing the football in Week 1, the Falcons have reason to believe they have found a great second option.
While this shouldn't rule out adding further to the position, it is encouraging that the Falcons know what they are doing and have made a wise decision in presenting Branch with such a clear path into the team's starting lineup.
