The Atlanta Braves return to Turner Field after a 6 game road trip to host division rival Washington Nationals for the penultimate series of the season.

After taking 2 of 3 games against the New York Mets at Citi Field last week, the Atlanta Braves were swept by the Miami Marlins this past weekend at Marlins Park. The Atlanta Braves enter this 3-game set with the Nats only having won 3 out of the 13 games played against Washington.

Atlanta Braves’ first-baseman Freddie Freeman enters the series as day-to-day with a sore right wrist, but will most likely see playing time during at some point. The Atlanta Braves’ offense has played better of late, especially during their series against the New York Mets, but saw were unable to keep up with the Marlins this past weekend.

Though this series is essentially meaningless in the grand scheme of the season, the Atlanta Braves can win back some pride after losing 13 of their 16 games so far against the Nationals this season. The Nationals are in complete disarray, evidenced by an altercation between RHP Jonathan Papelbon and OF Bryce Harper in the Nats’ dugout this past weekend. With Manager Matt Williams likely on his way out, there is no better time for the Bravos to win against their rivals as now.

Here are the pitching matchups for this week’s series.

Tuesday:

Tanner Roark (4-6, 4.76 ERA) vs. Matt Wisler (6-8, 5.40 ERA)

After spending some time in the bullpen this season, Tanner Roark once again became a part of the Nats’ starting rotation. Roark always seems to get run support against the Atlanta Braves, but is apt to give up some runs.

Matt Wisler has pitched much better at home this season, owning a 3-3 record and 3.80 ERA. In his last start against the New York Mets, Wisler pitched 7.0 innings while only allowing 2 earned runs.

Wednesday:

Jordan Zimmerman (13-8, 3.68 ERA) vs. Williams Perez (6-6, 5.04 ERA)

Williams Perez has pitched well in the month of September, owning a 3.64 ERA in the month of September. In his last start against the New York Mets, Perez pitched 7.0 innings while allowing only 2 earned runs.

Thursday:

Stephen Strasburg (10-7, 3.63 ERA) vs. Ryan Weber (0-2, 5.91)

Ryan Weber had a rough start in his last outing against the Miami Marlins, allowing 7 earned runs in only 2 innings pitched. Though he struggled in last start, Weber has overall been solid, allowing no more than 4 runs in his previous 4 starts.

This is a big series for the Atlanta Braves regardless of the standings or this point in the season. If they can take this 3-game set with the Nationals, it will give them confidence going into their final series of the season against the St. Louis Cardinals and ending the season on a good note. Go Braves!
