The Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets started their conference basketball schedule this afternoon with a double overtime, 83-76 loss to Notre Dame.

The Jackets had a chance to win the game in the final seconds after Jerian Grant missed a second free throw with 26 seconds left, with the score tied 59-59. Charles Mitchell got the rebound and Tech went down the court, where Marcus Georges-Hunt took his shot at the win.

But with three seconds on the clock, Hunt couldn’t get a layup to fall and complete an upset over the Irish.

It was a complete team effort in the first overtime period for the Jackets, with Mitchell, Georges-Hunt, Josh Heath, Chris Bolden and Demarco Cox each scoring two points to match Notre Dame’s 10 and take the game into a second overtime period.

And that’s where the Irish would take over the game. The first three minutes of the final period saw Notre Dame go on a 9-2 run thanks largely to Pat Connaughton. Trailing 78-71, Tech took a timeout with 1:56 left to play, but there just wasn’t enough time left to come back.

The Jackets scored just seven points in the second overtime period, while Notre Dame hit their final four free throws to bring their period scoring total to 14.

Georgia Tech finished the game shooting 41.7 percent from the floor and 31.3 percent from behind the arc while dominating the Irish on the glass, 45-31. Georges-Hunt led the Jackets with 20 points on 7-for-19 shooting, went 4-for-4 from the free throw line and added eight rebounds and a pair of steals.

While it’s definitely disappointing for Tech to take the loss in this one, their performance against the No. 14 team in the country in the conference opener on the road is extremely encouraging. Tech will go for their first win of the ACC schedule next Wednesday against Syracuse.
