Georgia Tech vs. Notre Dame Preview: Fighting the Irish

facebooktwitterreddit

Things are not going particularly well for the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets right now, as they have lost three consecutive games as ACC play opened. The most recent defeat for the Ramblin’ Wreck came against Wake Forest on the road on Saturday, and in order to get that taste out of their mouths, Georgia Tech will need to topple Notre Dame in an important conference battle on Wednesday night at McCamish Pavilion.

The visiting Irish enter with the best offense in country (per our friend Ken Pomeroy), as Notre Dame is scoring an obscene 121.0 points per 100 possessions on the year. A large portion of that offensive dominance comes from Jerian Grant, who is a legitimate candidate for National Player of the Year honors while leading Notre Dame to their current 15-2 record and top-15 ranking nationally.

Grant is a rare breed in that he is a senior with high-end athleticism and explosiveness, and the single biggest challenge for Brian Gregory and his team will be slowing Grant down for the better part of 40 minutes. Marcus Georges-Hunt would seem to be logical “stopper” choice, but look for the coaching staff to throw multiple looks at Grant in order to make the veteran work.

The Irish are a four-point “favorite” if you subscribe to KenPom’s numbers, but given the friendly venue, this is a winnable game for Georgia Tech. Still, the Jackets will need to execute at a far better level offensively to have a chance here, and falling to 0-4 in ACC play would be disastrous.
