Georgia Tech Wideout Darren Waller Goes to the Ravens

Georgia Tech wideout Darren Waller goes to the Baltimore Ravens in the sixth round of the 2015 NFL Draft.  Waller is huge at 6’6” and 238 lbs.  Baltimore makes this low risk draft selection hoping that Waller can develop into a solid receiver at the professional level.

Since he played at Tech, Waller can obviously run block from the wide receiver position as they run the triple option in Atlanta for Paul Johnson’s Yellow Jackets.  The measurables alone gave Darren Waller a third-to-fourth round draft grade.  The Ravens love to use very physical receivers in their passing game as new OC Marc Trestman takes over an inconsistent Baltimore passing game.

While Joe Flacco is one of the best quarterbacks in the business at delivering a catchable deep ball, he does rely on it too much and may want to take his game to the next level by being more efficient in the medium to short range passing game.  Waller can be a huge target in the middle for Flacco in Trestman’s new look offense.

Waller won’t fear safeties when leaping for passes between the hash marks for the Baltimore Ravens, as he is much bigger than most NFL safeties.  I expect the Ravens to slowly integrate Waller into their passing game, particularly in the slot, kind of how Jimmy Graham was used during his time in New Orleans.

It will be very interesting to see if Darren Waller can become a red zone threat for Joe Flacco in the coming years.  We have seen guys with small forward builds become very successful possession receivers and tight ends in recent seasons.  I’m not saying the Waller is the next Antonio Gates but it wouldn’t surprise me if he does develop into something special in the Baltimore Ravens receiving corps.
