How Many Wins For Georgia Tech Football This Season?

facebooktwitterreddit

Georgia Tech had a great 2014 season, beating Mississippi State in the Orange Bowl and finishing in the Top 10 in the AP Poll.  Though Tech loses many key players on both sides of the football in 2015, many believe that GT is still the favorite to come out of the Coastal Division to contend for an ACC Championship, possibly a College Football Playoff berth.  How many wins should we expect from Paul Johnson’s Yellow Jackets in 2015?

When you first look at Tech’s 2015 schedule, you see two very strong opponents in the non-conference (Notre Dame and obviously Georgia) as well as two great teams out of the Atlantic Division (Florida State and interdivisional rival Clemson).  Add in the fact that should the Coastal improve in 2015, Tech might have the most difficult schedule in the entire Atlantic Coast Conference.

Tech should win both non-conference games against Alcorn State and Tulane.  Not to say that the Braves or the Green Wave aren’t decent teams heading into this fall, but Tech is a major player in a solid Power 5 Conference and they are not.

  • Between Clemson, Florida State, Georgia and Notre Dame.  Tech would be lucky to go 3-1.  As of now, I feel that Tech splits these four games, winning their two road games (@ Notre Dame and @ Clemson) and drops both home games (Florida State and Georgia) at Bobby Dodd.

No ACC team has beaten FSU since NC State did it back in early 2012.  Though the Seminoles will be sans Jameis Winston, now with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, I’ll have to see it to believe it that an ACC team can beat Florida State, now being led by Notre Dame transfer QB Everett Golson.

As badly as Tech wants to beat Georgia at home, the Jackets have yet to beat a Mark Richt-led team in Atlanta.  It has the makings of a great Clash of the Titans should both of our state’s Power 5 teams contending for Conference Championships and CFP Bids during Thanksgiving Week.

Where the real challenge for Georgia Tech lies is within the Coastal Division.  Can GT come out of divisional play unscathed?  I feel that wins over Pittsburgh and Virginia are very likely.  North Carolina and Miami (FL) have been on the rise the last few seasons with their relatively new HCs (Larry Fedora and Al Golden, respectively).  I still think Tech beats both the Tar Heels and the Hurricanes.

And then there’s Duke and Virginia Tech, the two teams I see most likely to beat the Yellow Jackets in the division.  Duke under HC David Cutcliffe has become a serious football program and will contend for a Coastal Title this year.  Virginia Tech might have had a down year last year for longtime HC Frank Beamer but the Hokies usually have a strong team.

While Georgia Tech could certainly beat both teams next year, I get the feeling that the Jackets could either lose at Wallace Wade Stadium to the Blue Devils or at home on a Thursday night primetime game to the Hokies.  Let’s just say that Tech splits these two games.

So Georgia Tech is looking at a 9-3 (6-2) regular season.  I think it’s imperative for the Jackets to beat Duke as I think it might come down to the tiebreaker between these two teams.  VT could win the Coastal as well, but after last year I’m not certain that the Hokies can go 6-2 in conference play in 2015.  They feel more like a 5-3 team to me.

If Tech were to make it to the ACC Championship again in 2015, the team would probably play either Clemson, Florida State, or Louisville, all great football teams.  Tech could win or lose all three of these hypothetical conference championship games.

Winning the ACC with three losses won’t get the Jacket into the CFP, but definitely to a New Year’s Six Bowl, especially with how tough their schedule is.  If Tech were to run the gauntlet and enter bowl season undefeated, they could be either a 1 or 2-seed in the Playoff without question.

Tech surprised most of us with their marvelous season last year.  But how will Paul Johnson’s team fair now that the expectations for the team are incredibly high?  To me, Tech feels like a 11-3, 10-4 at the moment.  They should stay ranked all season and have a great opportunity to play in a meaningful bowl game.  If the Jackets can win most of these tough games, they could have another special season in 2015.
