The Atlanta Hawks defeated the Miami Heat in the first round of the Las Vegas Summer League playoff bracket by a score of 75-64.

Mike Muscala shined for the Hawks, notching a double/double with 15 points and 12 rebounds in Wednesday’s game. Muscala received a DNP-CD in Monday night’s game against the D-League Select team, allowing the Hawks’ Power Forward to have an extra day of rest. It showed on Wednesday, as Muscala was active on both ends of the court, displaying his veteran savvy and experience in a difficult game against an athletic Heat team.

Walter Tavares continues to make strides in his play during the LVSL, performing well once again in Wednesday’s game, scoring 10 points while shooting 5-7 from the field. His 10 points go along with 7 rebounds and 5 blocks yesterday against the Heat. Edy Tavares has showcased his ability to protect the rim and to corral boards for the team. He will be fun to watch play in training camp and in a Hawks uniform next season — especially if he becomes a part of Coach Bud’s primary rotation.

Terran Pettaway of the University of Nebraska got the start for Kenny Atkinson’s club, scoring 8 points in almost 29 minutes versus the Heat. Greg Smith, Jon Horford, and Abraham Millsap all received DNP-CD’s.

The bright spot for the Atlanta Hawks during the Las Vegas Summer League is the play and development of prospect Edy Tavares. While his offense still needs work and his footwork is a little slow, he has shown his ability to protect the rim and to hit the boards. Lamar Patterson and Glenn Robinson has placed themselves in a place to contend for the last roster spot at the Atlanta Hawks training camp, pending invitations.

The Atlanta Hawks Summer League team plays again tonight in a rematch with Emmanuel Mudiay and the Denver Nuggets in the quarterfinals of the LVSL tournament.
