Atlanta Hawks: Top 5 Bench Players in 2016
By John Buhler
Bringing C Tiago Splitter to the Atlanta Hawks after spending the last five seasons with the San Antonio Spurs was a great strategic move made by Coach Bud and Wes Wilcox. Splitter started for the Spurs the last few seasons and was a key part in San Antonio’s NBA Title run in 2014.
Splitter is already very familiar with Coach Bud’s system as he worked with Bud in San Antonio from 2010 to 2013. Though there certainly are variances between what Gregg Popovich runs in the Alamo City and what Mike Budenholzer does here in Atlanta, I see Splitter’s transition in Atlanta almost seamless.

Atlanta was not a good rebounding team the last two seasons under Bud and the front office looked to address this issue with the trade to acquire Tiago Splitter. Unlike Al Horford who plays out of position, Tiago Splitter is a true center and can either start or come off the bench for the Hawks as a major big man on their roster.
Though Dennis Schroder is the Atlanta Hawks’ sixth man, Splitter perhaps is the most important player coming off the bench or spot starting for Atlanta. He gives the Hawks much-needed versatility if the team wishes to go big. If Atlanta is able to corral a few more second chance opportunities on offense with Splitter on the court, Atlanta could be an even more lethal team shooting the basketball in 2016.
