Greyson Lambert: Can He Win UGA QB Job?
By John Buhler
Junior Quarterback Greyson Lambert opted to transfer from the University of Virginia after graduating this summer to play for his in-state school, The University of Georgia. Lambert has two years of eligibility remaining and expects to compete with RS Sophomore Brice Ramsey and Junior Faton Bauta entering fall camp in 2015. Can Greyson Lambert possibly win the sacred UGA starting quarterback gig here this season?

Lambert certainly could given that Georgia has a new offensive coordinator entering 2015 with Brian Schottenheimer coming to the SEC via the NFL’s St. Louis Rams. Had former OC Mike Bobo stayed at UGA and not taken the HC job with the Colorado State Rams, Brice Ramsey would have already been likely named the 2015 starting quarterback for the Georgia Bulldogs.

So in all honesty, neither Ramsey or Bauta really have that much of a leg up on Greyson Lambert in the classroom part of the offense. And you have to remember, Lambert graduated from a Public Ivy institution in the University of Virginia in less than four years. So the guy is very cerebral and should grasp Schottenheimer’s pro style offense with some spread concepts fairly easy.
Remember we saw Russell Wilson learn the entire Wisconsin playbook in a week after transferring from NC State with one year of eligibility remaining. I’m not saying that it’s likely that Lambert masters Schotty’s offensive system in 29 practices before the season starts on September 5th versus the ULM Warhawks.
But I do think that Greyson Lambert will get a fair shot at winning the job. Honestly, UGA doesn’t have to name a starting QB until Week 3 against the rival South Carolina Gamecocks at home on September 19th. So I expect Ramsey, Bauta and Lambert to all get some live action in Weeks 1 and 2 against ULM and Vanderbilt. Whoever performs the best in those games could go a long way in seeing who gets to start the remaining 10 to 13 games for the Dawgs in 2015.

Lambert doesn’t have the arm of Brice Ramsey or Bauta’s mobility, but Greyson has had more starting experience that both of his competitors combined. Greyson Lambert started 9 of the Cavaliers 12 games last season for a team that narrowly missed out on a bowl game bid at 5-7. It’s not great but it’s more in game experience that either Ramsey or Bauta have.
I think Mark Richt, Brian Schottenheimer, and the rest of the 2015 Georgia Bulldogs program are in a good spot at the quarterback position. All three competitors could start for many Power 5 schools, but I feel the assumption is that it’s Brice Ramsey’s to lose with Faton Bauta right behind him. But throwing Greyson Lambert into the mix should only bring out the best in UGA’s QBs.
To me the biggest challenge for Lambert isn’t learning the playbook or transferring to the SEC, it’s establishing credibility with his new teammates. We all know about how much respect the Dawgs’ players have for Faton Bauta and Ramsey is well-entrenched in what’s expected from him to play for the Georgia Bulldogs. Though Greyson Lambert is from Jesup, GA, he has to learn a new football culture of what it means to play Between the Hedges.
This quarterback competition has the makings of a photo finish victory between the three men vying for the starting job. Like I said, Richt and Schottenheimer won’t name a starter until they absolutely have to which is Week 3 against the South Carolina Gamecocks over a month and a half away. Though isn’t the favorite to win, expect Greyson Lambert to go down swinging in this QB Battle.
