Atlanta Braves’ Bullpen Implodes, Lose to Giants 8-3

facebooktwitterreddit

The Atlanta Braves nearly had this one, much like that second diving grab attempt by LF Eury Perez. The ball was in the glove, the game was in control and then it wasn’t.  It got away from the club without a blink of an eye.

Shelby Miller deserved to win this game.  He pitched seven strong innings despite not having his best stuff.  He kept pace with San Francisco’s RHP Jake Peavy even with three walks tonight.  Miller actually was in line to win the game when reliever George Kontos gave up two seventh inning runs to the Atlanta lineup.  The elusive sixth win of the year for Shelby Miller was there for the taking.

Then of course, the bullpen collapsed horribly in the eighth inning.  Ross Detwiler surrendered the game-tying run, rendering Miller a no-decision. Then David Aardsma gave up a laser line-drive three-run homer to RF Hunter Pence that took the air out of Turner Field, making it 6-3 Giants.  San Francisco would go on to win Tuesday night in a bit of a laugher 8-3 over the Atlanta Braves.

  • I’d buy Shelby Miller a run at this point of the season if I could.  He needs a hug more than ever.  Too bad the best hugger in baseball Freddie Freeman just went back on the Disabled List.  Perhaps it’s Jonny Gomes‘ turn to pay it forward.  I mean he was on the Freddie Freeman Hugging Bobblehead, right?

I feel it was fate for the San Francisco Giants to win this game they way they did after how the Atlanta Braves won it in dramatic fashion last night on Adonis Garcia‘s walkoff two-run homer.  Three runs didn’t feel safe with the way the Giants tend to score runs in a hurry.  Pence’s homer took maybe three seconds to crash into the bleachers.  He crushed Aardsma’s offering that soundly.

One player on the Atlanta Braves tonight stood out above the rest.  That guy was Daniel Castro.  He filled in for Andrelton Simmons at short very well tonight, going 3-4 with 2 runs scored, raising his average to .316 in his short time in the Big Leagues.

Pedro Ciriaco continues to thrive off the bench for the Atlanta Braves with another clutch pinch-hit RBI scoring Castro to give the Braves a temporary lead of 3-2.  He’s been Atlanta’s best bench player by far this season and I’m fully confident that he will perform when he gets the start.

It all comes down to the rubber game tomorrow night when Williams Perez takes on Madison Bumgarner.  Sending all my luck to Perez in his start as he will certainly need it against the 2014 World Series MVP.  Better luck tomorrow night, Braves Country.  Go Braves!
